What is a Beowulf?

• A high performance parallel computing system built from commodity processors

  • Named after the first such system build at NASA by Donald Becker, et. al.
  • Typically x86 processors, but could be any hardware supported by Linux
  • MIMD, NUMA, NOW, MPI, SSI
  • Often connected by ethernet

• An SMP system is not a Beowulf.
